Paediatric Ophthalmology Services

At Vision Care Center, we specialize in the treatment of eye diseases, visual development, and vision care in children. The eye problems that children face are:

  • Children’s cataracts

A cataract is basically the clouding of the lens of the eye. This prevents the rays of light from entering the eye and focusing on the retina. This results in blurred vision, or lack of vision in severe cases.

Cataracts are very rare in children. However, they either affect one eye or both the eyes. Some cataracts are small and do not cause any vision problems while some advanced conditions can cause vision problems in children.

  • Strabismus (squints) and lazy eye (amblyopia)

Strabismus is a common ailment among children. It is a visual problem in which the eyes are not aligned properly and point in different directions. One eye may look straight ahead, while the other eye turns outward, inward, downward or upward. The eye turn may be consistent. Which eye is straight and which is misaligned, may switch or alternate.

Amblyopia is an eyesight improvement disorder wherein an eye couldn't achieve a normal visual accuracy, even with contact lenses or prescription eyeglasses. Also known as lazy eye, it begins during infancy and early childhood. In maximum cases, just one eye gets affected. But in some cases, decreased visual accuracy can occur in both the eyes.

  • Inflammatory eye disease & Uveitis

Uveitis is a term which is used in general to describe a group of inflammatory disease that produces swelling and destroys eye tissues. These can lead to reduced vision or severe loss of vision. These diseases affect children as well.

  • Albinism & Nystagmus

Albinism is a genetic condition where people are born without the usual pigment (colour) in their bodies. Their bodies are not able to produce the normal amount of melanin, the chemical responsible for skin, hair and eye colour. People with albinism often have difficulty with their vision. They may wear glasses or contact lenses to help correct vision problems. Others may need eye surgery.

Nystagmus is a vision condition in which the eyes make uncontrolled, repetitive movements. These movements often result in reduced vision and depth perception and can affect balance and coordination.

  • Retinopathy

ROP is an eye disease that can happen in premature babies. It causes abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retina and can lead to blindness.

  • Pediatric neurological disease

The movement and alignment of the eye are controlled by many nerves. And any kind of problems or external factors that interfere with the proper functioning of the nerves, leads to abnormal eye movements and misalignment of the eyes.

If your child has an eye problem or has difficulty reading or learning, or needs surgery or medical treatment for an illness affecting the eyes, our expert pediatric ophthalmologists have the experience and qualifications to treat your child.
