Corneal Transplantation

What is Cornea?

This is your eye’s outermost protective coating. It is a transparent dome-shaped exterior, which covers the exterior of your eye. Along with the Sclera (which is the white part of your eye), it protects your eye against any kind of germs, dirt or anything that can cause damage to your eye. In fact, your cornea can also filter some of the sun’s ultraviolet light as well.

Corneas play a key role in your vision. When the light enters the eye, the curved surface of your cornea refracts the light. This refraction determines how well one can see and focus on an object up close or far away. It is an extremely well-organised tissue. The cornea doesn't have any blood vessels for nourishment and protection. Instead, they receive their nourishment and moisture from tears. Every time you blink, tears get dispersed across the cornea. They help moisten your eyes, protect against any infection and heal wounds.

What is a Corneal Transplant?

In case of any scratches or minor injuries, the cornea normally heals itself. However, if there is a deeper injury or damage due to any disease or infection, the resultant scars can block or distort the light that enters the eye. Thus, severely affecting your vision. Also, scarred or damaged corneas are very painful, they cause redness of the eye and your eyelids would seem very heavy when you open or close them.

When the cornea is beyond repair with the help of medications or is severely damaged and affects your vision, a corneal transplant is required. Corneal transplant is also called corneal grafting. It is a surgical procedure that replaces your damaged corneal tissue with a healthy tissue donated by an organ donor. Once done, the new cornea greatly improves your vision. In severely damaged cases where a person is blind, this procedure can bring back total vision.

Cornea grafting is of two types:

1.Penetrating Keratoplasty

When the entire cornea is replaced, it is known as Penetrating Keratoplasty.

2.Lamellar Keratoplasty

When only part of the cornea is replaced, it is known as Lamellar Keratoplasty.
